I developed a problem today with my MTD Yard Man AutoDrive Lawn Tractor Model 604, 46" cut. The mower blades turn fine, the engine starts fine, but it won't go into gear. When I try to put into gear it makes a faint groan and I can smell rubber burning. Any ideas on what this problem could be? Thanks very much.

Professional Shop Manuals

Right side of page under Hot Links, click Manuals Online and enter your model and serial numbers, go to troubleshooting section. You need to remove deck and replace drive belt.

Suggestion: Use original mfg parts belts etc.

Hello,

You need to replace the main drive belt, what happens is the belts wear and stretch so what your getting is the belt just spinning on the pulleys trying to get traction, then because the belt is slipping this will then cause the burning you are seeing.
