yamaha 824 engine in bad boy rogue

I have a Bad boy rogue with the 824 yamaha engine last year i had an oil pump that started leaking and had to be replaced. This season my second cutting the mower quit running so i hauiled it back to the local dealer. they determined that the two intake valves seized in the head. The dealer was able to get one head off fine but the other head had one head bolt that was also seized in the head. They were finally able to get the head bolt out without breaking but its ruined the threads in the head and they say the factory said it has ruined the head beyond repair and the motor has to be replaced. they cannot even get the valves out of the heads.
at this point the yamaha factory takes no responsibility for the issues with the engine and leaves me with the decision to replace the engine with something else beside Yamaha. I will never purchase another Yamaha engine and probably not a Bad boy mower.

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. What year is your Rogue?
I have a 2021 Rogue with that Yamaha engine that I'm currently using for the fifth season. Mine has been good overall with no specific issues. I did have one occasion where leaves and grass clippings plugged the air intake on top of the engine causing it to heat up too much. After I shut it down and then tried to restart it was really slow turning over, likely because of overheating. That was several years ago and no further issues since I now pay close attention to keeping that air intake clear to keep the engine cool.

The Yamaha engines were junk. Bad Boy, Husqvarna, and Gravely used Yamaha engines at one time.
I had a MX800V on a Pro Turn 160 that was nothing but trouble. The dealer gave me full credit towards another mower at 87 hours.

That's a pretty broad brush and likely unrealistic portrayal. The dealer I bought my Rogue only ordered BB models with Yamaha engines when they were available for a model. His broader business was a powersports dealer featuring Yamaha so that's why he liked them. And he sells quite a few BB units each year. If the Yamaha engines were generally failure-prone I don't think he would have been exclusively ordering them that way.

Here's the deal. Bad Boy, Gravely, and Husqvarna all offered Yamaha engines at one time. Their failure rate was higher than the Kawasaki, Briggs, and Kohler. All three dropped them. My Gravely dealer used my old mower as a loaner. The last time I talked with him, it was on it's third Yamaha engine. Also, the Yamaha mower engines were not the same as their power sports engines. They were rebranded Chinese made Subaru designs. Yamaha purchased Subaru Industrial Engines. One more thing. Yamaha is or has divested itself from the power and small engines. EPP of Japan is to get that segment. It will be very hard to get replacement parts for the Yamaha MX engines.

Seems to me you're out voted by "broad brush" real world experiences. What you may think is a Yamaha may not actually be a Yamaha but one in name only.

Sucks that Yamaha won’t stand behind it, especially with such low hours. You’re not the first I’ve seen swearing off both Yamaha engines and Bad Boy mowers after something like this.If you end up swapping, a lot of folks have had better luck dropping in a Kawasaki FX or Briggs Vanguard.

That’s rough.I’ve heard of a few guys having issues with the Yamaha 824s, mostly around valve seizure and poor oil flow, especially if the motor runs hot or has long intervals between oil changes. Bad Boy, just like some other manufacturers, got fooled by Yamaha's marketing game and reputation. These engines were not what they were made out to be. These were old Subaru designs that were made in China. They had 3 valves per cylinder and hemisphere heads. The valves could not be adjusted by traditional means.
