Are Toro mowers generally a big pain to work on for a DIY? I have a Personal Pace Recycler mower (new in 2002). I just can't seem to work on the self propelled system. One time the transmission had an issue and I couldn't even remove it. Then last week I tried to start it up to mow my yard and I head a pop noise. It turned out to be my traction cable that broke on the Z connector. Now even after watching a Youtube video on how to replace it, I just can't get the old one disconnected underneath the deck. I can't get the tabs depressed to release the cable from the deck and I can't get the U shaped hook unhooked at the end of the cable because there doesn't seem to be enough room to twist the cable around to unhook it. Do most people have a lot of trouble working on Toros or is it just me doing something wrong? :frown: Thanks in advance.

There was a curious bar or rod that ran from one wheel to the other on the rear. There was nothing attached to it. I removed the LR wheel and took the bolt out for that rod and rotated it around as need to get it out of the way while trying to unhook the old cable (the J end) and reconnect the new one. Once I did that there was sufficient space for me to work with. The video didn't seem to show or address that metal rod. Maybe their later model did away with it.

I replaced the belt on my Toro 20007 yesterday. Afterwards the self propel wouldn't engage. I can't seem to get the required tension back in the cable even after following the manufacturer instructions : pull cable downward and push cable housing up 1/8" and tighten bolt.
Spring is hooked correctly into the hole in the mower deck and the s hook attached to the bail.
Seems like I'm missing something. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the correct size belt and it appears that the belt is securely around the crankshaft pulley. This video may shed more insight:

With the belt cover off does the belt get tighter when you pull on the handle? The pulley should start spinning when you pull on the handle and stop when released. Sorry, on my system the video does not work.
Belt's not getting tighter when I pull the bail handle. The more I looked at it, all I can come up with is that its not the right belt. Someone on another forum agrees based on the video. I'll pick up a new belt this week; hopefully that fixes it.
