Only thing I can think of other than a bad bearing on deck is the carb is junk. after 8 disassembled cleanings this thing had whopped my butt, and no one makes a replacement carb for it. 303777 briggs 16 hp vangaurd twin cyl on a 42 inch snapper sr1642. run like a dream until it is under a load. I need some good advise on how to fix this thing, been at it a solid week and still not cutting grass....:ashamed:

SR1642,

Your 'powerloss' is more than likely due to the possibility that your engine is running on one cylinder. Yes, the engine will sound fine and seem to run fine on just one cylinder, but when you need the power, it's not their. If the engine is not missing, popping or back-firing, you most likely just have a bad ignition coil. With the engine running, you can disconnect the spark plug boot with insulated pliers one at a time. If you pull the left boot and it has no effect on the way the engine is running, then it is not firing. If you pull it and the engine dies, then it is firing and the other cylinder is not.

Try that and see were we are from there.

Good Luck!

Amazon.com: Briggs & Stratton # 807962 KIT-CARB OVERHAUL: Industrial & Scientific Absolutely correct, 808728 carburetor is no longer available. If your engine data plate has numbers 303777 1118-A1 code 95012611, this is your carburetor kit, shop for best price. My son & I had same carburetor problem with SR1642, ordered kit from Amazon, disassembled carburetor & ran small wire from loaf of bread tie or trash bag tie, minus paper, through all orifices & cleaned with carburetor cleaner, ran like a champ after final adjustments. Take your time & be patient. I would also check air filter & foam pre-cleaner for replacement. Let us know how it goes.

This is just concerning carburetor, Honda Tech has right idea concerning power loss.

MY FRIEND YOU ARE A GENIOUS!!!! ALTHOUGH I HAD BEEN THROUGH EVERY INCH OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ONE CYL WAS NOT FIRING. THE MOWER WHICH IS A SNAPPER 42 INCH SR1642 WITH 16HP ENGINE WAS RETIRED BY ITS PREVIOUS OWNER AS IT STOPPED FIRING AND HIS MECHANIC TOLD HIM THE MOTOR HAD BAD VALVES AND HE NEEDED A NEW MOTOR. SO HE JUST TAKES IT BEHIND HIS BUSINESS AND LEAVES IT THERE FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS UNCOVERED TO ENDURE THE WEATHER. I BOUGHT IT JUST FOR THE BODY FOR $150.00 AS I HAVE A MOTOR TO FIT IT. AFTER BRINGING IT HOME I FOUND THAT THE MOTOR TURNED FREELY AND HAD COMPRESSION, NOTHING KNOCKING OR BINDING. SO I CHECKED IT FOR FIRING AND IT WASNT. I CLEANED THE FLYWHEEL AND COILS AND STILL NO FIRE. I UNPLUGGED THE GROUNDS ON BOTH COILS AND IT FIRED. WENT THROUGH THE CARB ABOUT 6 TIMES AS IT WAS A MESS WITH RUST. EVERYTHING BACK TOGETHER AND IT STILL WAS LOSING POWER WHEN ENGAGING BLADES. EVERYONE SAID IT WAS STILL THE CARB. WELL TODAY I WAS JUST ABOUT TO TO CASH IN MY IDIOT CARD AND DO THE UNTHINKABLE AND TAKE IT TO A LOCAL LAWN MOWER MECHANIC, UNTIL YOU SAVED ME WITH YOUR POST THIS MORNING. I WENT OUT AND AS I WAS GOING TO PULL OUT THE PLUGS AND CHECK FOR FIRING THE SPARK PLUG BOOT FELL OFF IN MY HAND... YEA, WASNT MAKING CONNECTION.... AND I HAVE CHECKED IT TAKEN OFF IT PUT IT BACK ON A HUNDRED TIMES. OH WELL WE LIVE AND LEARN!!!! ANY THANKS FOR THE TIP. IM A HAPPY SNAPPER OWNER NOW!!! LOL...... I CUTS AND RUNS LIKE A NEW ONE ALL FOR A TOTAL INVESTMENT OF ABOUT $170.00 FOR MOWER AND PARTS. OH AND A FEW GOODY POWDERS...

Thanks Mark, I still have a couple of issue with the carb . I don't think I am getting the high end RPM's that I should be and I am having float probs. I just wish I could find a carb that would work on it. The prob with rebuilding the one I have is that the housing is in bad shape, threads worn out in every hole. I cut about 2.5 acres today and left a beautiful cut and ran pretty well until I broke the blade belt. I was just getting ready to post a question on here as-to the best way to speed up the blade RPM'S without spending much and without a headache. I'm thinking change the blade pulleys?
