It seems like every few months our lawn mower will start having difficulty running. When I crank it will start like normal but gradually the engine will slow down to a complete stop. Sometimes it will keep running weakly then stops once it hits grass but mostly it will run for like five seconds tops.
When ever it starts to do this we always have to take it to the shop to get it sorted out before we can use it. Truthfully at this point it's getting expensive and we're never really given a straight forward answer as to why it's doing it, how to prevent it in the future.
We're always told something different when we take it in and frankly the main things we've been told are conflicting. Twice siting in the shed all winter with gas, twice after running out of gas while mowing.
Last time it happened instead of taking it to our usual mechanic my adoptive uncle fixed it for us. He told me it was probably becouse it had gas in it all winter even though it started acting up the second time I ran it this year. It ran fine the first time. He did should show me how to clean the holes behind the filter with a can of compressed air. As far as I know that's all he did and it was running great until today.

Ok so today, this is what happened. Last time I mowed about three weeks ago, it ran out of gas. We didn't have anymore in the tank and didn't get more till yesterday. A few areas of the back yard got really deep and it rained yesterday afternoon.
This morning the grass was still damp. I started with the deep areas first, was careful not to mow to much at once. But wads of cuttings still kept getting stuck around the blade. At one point a preticulay large wad got wedged in the blades and wouldn't shake loose. I had to tip the mower on its side to remove the grass from the blade. After I set the mower back up right it wouldn't start again right away and ended up being like three minuets or so before it would.
I just figure it needed time before the gas worked its way into the engine.
While I contunoud mowing it got stuck with grass a few more times but resumed like normal after the grass was removed.
Once I finished with the areas of the yard I let go of the gas bar to stop it so I could monever it into another area of the yard. But once I try to cranke it again..surprise, the engine stutters a bit the dies out.
I checked the gas tank it's full, cleaned the filter and the valve behind it twice, cleaned out the build up of grass around the blade. It still want run consistently.

At this point I'm honestly beyond frustrated and just want to know,
1. What actually makes this stuttering problem happen?
I've been told multiple reasons from because of leaving gas left siting in it for too long, because I let it run out of gas, and because the cardinator is dirty. But it seems to me there's something more to it then that.
2. More importantly how can I prevent it from happening and or is there a simple way to repair/clean it on my own when it does?
I'm no mechanic, but if it means saving my mom money and a trip to one every three weeks or so I could defiantly learn what to do what ever needs to be done.

You might want to post the engines model number.

Make sure no dirt or debris is entering the fuel. Check the mowers gas tank and gas container. Also clean the air filter housing and replace the air filter and pre filter if needed. Make sure the breather tube is connected and is not damaged.

Always run all fuel out of the mower before storing the mower for winter.

Ethanol is the answer.
Find if you can non ethanol gas. It can only come in the premium grade by law in almost every state in the union. You have to look around for a gas station that actually say there premium does not contain ethanol. It will normally be cleaner gas as well. One more thing. Do not buy gas from a gas station called KUM & GO. They have some of the nastiest gas known to man.
