Pulled the crank and it had a hole on the flywheel side!
Connecting rod was gone!
I straightened the cup-like plug and and pushed it in place at the connecting rod end of the crankshaft. Without the plug oil won't reach the flywheel end of the crank. It appears that the way the crank was machined, a plug was necessary. A spring clip like the one holding the crankpin in probably would have been a good idea. This would prevent the plug from popping out like it did.

When you say connecting rod do you mean the piston rod or the syncro balancer pin/rod ?? Take a couple pics and show them on here.
My guess is low oil and it overheated. I expanded it and then pressed it in. Kind of a weak design. I think it'll hold as long as I keep it properly lubed and unobstructed airway.
Man i hope mine don't that , it was given to me sat in 3 ft of water during theflood in Sour lake .. i brought it home drained the oil/water mixture, sparyed some rust releae in the cylinders and turned the engine with the plugs out should have seen the water bugs and stuff came out off thet poor guy, hooked up my boat gas to it sprayed some etehr in the inle tline and watch Johnny go, ran rough but it took a while to line out, smoked white/ blue, balck and purple tank..:laughingut him to teh side will need belts and a little cleaning
