I guessing its a crankshaft plug.

I haven't pulled the crank yet but notice there's a machined out area facing the flywheel.

Is there a hole on the end of it ?? It got hit by something for sure. What was the engine doing when you decided to open it up ??

Was the cam in place when you popped the sump off ???

Pulled the crank and it had a hole on the flywheel side!
Connecting rod was gone!
I straightened the cup-like plug and and pushed it in place at the connecting rod end of the crankshaft. Without the plug oil won't reach the flywheel end of the crank. It appears that the way the crank was machined, a plug was necessary. A spring clip like the one holding the crankpin in probably would have been a good idea. This would prevent the plug from popping out like it did.

When you say connecting rod do you mean the piston rod or the syncro balancer pin/rod ?? Take a couple pics and show them on here.

I am curious to see what happened in there ~!~!

No pics! Already up and running. The plug fitted in the end of the crankshaft where the piston rod connects.

How did it get out of that hole?

What's going to keep that from happening again?

My guess is low oil and it overheated. I expanded it and then pressed it in. Kind of a weak design. I think it'll hold as long as I keep it properly lubed and unobstructed airway.
