Hello everyone
I was interested in knowing if a 140702 vertical shaft engine from 1961 contains any asbestos in the gaskets. I can see some of the head gasket and I'm almost certain that is asbestos. However I am not sure about the sump and intake gasket. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks

It more likely that head gasket is mica based as if any asbestos was used it would have been in the exhaust gaskets. As for the sump and intake those are treated paper. As far as I can find there is no service bulletins about the use of asbestos as there would been a requirement to let the service techs know so protective measures could be used.

Oil it down and scrape it off. No danger there. I wouldn't be surprised if they still use asbestos in some gaskets.
