Where the %&$#@ does this spring go?

Just bought an old Craftsman 917.254860 lawn tractor with the B/S 422707 twin. It wasn't running so I pulled the Walbro carb (not sure of type but it has the three screws on the fuel pump) and cleaned the needle and seat and every other orifice I could. As I was reassembling it there was a small 1 in. long spring in the pan that I hadn't noticed or disconnected. I have no idea where it might go as there seems to be not connecting linkages that fit.
The mower runs now but the throttle seems unresponsive and there is a slow surge. I can't imagine this spring comes from the governor or it never would have made it into the shop along with the carb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll include a picture of either side of the carb and the spring in the manual which does not show the location.

Just doing some more sleuthing and found a post with two other folks with the exact same issue here
Def not a gov. spring but what the heck is this thing.

That is your governed idle spring, i believe it hooks to the governor arm on the front left side of the engine, i can't really describe it well, but i have a opposed twin that i can take picture of to show you how and where the spring goes.

If you could post a pic I would sure appreciate it as I am stymied.

here's a quick snip out of the manual
check to be sure that governor spring is in place

Appreciated but that is not it.
My third pic doesn't really show it well but the governor springs are all much heavier and are in place. This had to come off the carb because that's all I took into the shop. The link I posted has a pic of the spring. It's really quite light weight. I saw one carb where there was a spring of similar size to pull the throttle back onto the idle set screw but mine doesn't have an opposing anchor point to the front of the carb???

Ooh yeah, that's a pretty light spring

I have an 18TwinII on my Case 446. I cleaned the carburetor 2wc and it was still surging. Then the fuel pump started leaking so I bought a new carburetor and now it runs great. The original had 3 bolts on the fuel pump and the new one has 4 so either will work. I'll look and see if I can spot that spring on my engine.

I wonder if that is not item 232 which could fit over the top of 202 in his posted diagram. Acts like a anti vibration spring to stabilize the throttle linkage.

that's what i am thinking, i ordered a bell crank for an opposed twin, and a spring came with it and the instructions read to hook it to the Governor arm and bell crank, where the throttle link goes. *If high speed surging occures

I’m thinking, seeing it’s an idle return spring, that it is located between the governor arm and throttle control. I’ve seen something like that on generator engines with shut down idle controls. Scrub might be on the right track, but I’m then confused because it is called an ”idle control spring “.

It is B&S model 422707 type 1522-01

Scrubcadet that's definitely the spring, just don't know how it connects. Any possible connection points seem too far to span.

did you try from the Governor arm to the plastic bell crank? it goes in the same holes that the metal link rod goes in.

Guess that's my only option it just doesn't seem like a proper fit. Thanks for all the responses ?

Check out Sec 4, page 2, Figure 1 of this manual. Could that be the spring location? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6NaqjIxWV1ybHphbUNTQUNNR2s/view

@Rivets I was thinking more along the lines of Section 3 page 6 fig 13 backlash spring

IL, I missed that one and I totally agree with you. To the OP, disregard my post and go with what IL posted, I’m wrong and he’s got you on the correct track.

Save the OEM carb if it is OEM. Clean it a few more times. Keep it for a backup.

I'll do that and order new gaskets and diaphragms for the pump.

Do we have two threads in one here, I’m old and get confused easily?

Well I thought I hit the jackpot today. Saw an old craftsman sitting in a yard so I thought I'd ask to look under the hood. Be my guest was the reply. So I did and there was the mystery spring in all it's glory hooked from one end of the bell crank to the other end of the bell crank ?. Maybe it's just for show after all.

Kinda looks like the spring that connects the throttle to the governor linkage so when you move the throttle, it provides a steady pull on the throttle linkage. It is needed to maintain pressure as the governor does it's governing thing.
