Working on a used John Deere Sabre "lawn tractor" I inherited.
I had to take the fuel tank out to remove a bunch of little plastic pieces from it - apparently the inside liner of a broken fuel cap came apart - and I wasn’t paying attention to what I believe is the overflow hose and pulled out that 2' hose with the tank. Now I can’t figure out the proper way to re-install the overflow hose down through the frame..
It appears the overflow hose previously ran through a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank compartment (see 2nd pic) Whether this was factory or the last owners folly isn’t clear.
Then I realized that must not be correct because the hose pushed into that hole would only drain into the long u-shaped steel channel that I believe must hold the chassis to the deck. This isn’t a place I’d think John Deere would channel gas into - it would just sit there waiting for a spark until it evaporated.
The channel is full of shredded grass and dirt with no easy way to clean it, and I can’t tell if it might have holes in it overflow fuel could drain from.
Regardless, it wouldn’t make sense to drain overflow gas right above the deck, down into the blades right?
I could go buy a longer hose, drill some holes and rig up some workaround so it drains off to the side or behind the mower somewhere, but theres little to no room in this tight compartment to make changes.
So I thought I’d ask for opinions here first so to see if I might reinstall the drain overflow hose the easiest and safest way that it came from the factory...
