I own a massey ferguson 7 lawn tractor. It has an 8 hp teumseh engine that needs serious help, would rather swap for a briggs and stratton engine. I am wondering what model engine to replace it without making modifications.

Two things would help us help you. One, are the engines numbers from the Tecumseh. We need to find out the crankshaft size and length. Second, if you can take some pictures of how the engine is mounted in the tractor and how the controls are hooked up. Are you thinking about going larger, to say an 8 or 10 HP? Depending on the set-up many times B & S will directly swap with a Tecumseh.

Looking at the pics, a couple of things I need to point out. First, I didn't realize the age of the engine you are swapping out. You may have a difficult time finding an engine that will fit in that small footprint. Not impossible, just going to take some time. Second, make sure that you get the same length crankshaft, to accept that double pulley. Third, your new engine must have a charging system, to charge the battery you, plus you may have to do some rewiring to fit your tractor.

If you can find a B&S from an old snowblower from the 80's you should be able to swap. Many even find one with an electric start. Newer B&S don't have the same footprint. I would check with all the dealers and repair shops in your area. I know that they are out there, it may take some time.
