What is with the Duraforce ignition coils?

My mower is from 2001. The coil was replaced once about four or five years ago. It is giving me grief again.

Wth is with these things? It is just wound copper wire, no? Is the wire of insufficient gauge and breaking or something? I'm wondering what the fix is, other than replacing the coil every 4-5 years (my mower doesn't get heavy use, I know some of you have to replace them more often than that).

I've never had problems with my coil, and my DuraForce is from 98 or 99. Coils are a known problem on 2 stroke Suzuki engines on the Toro's, but I haven't heard of the same problem on LawnBoy's. Usually there either work or not. Just thinking out loud, is your blade fairly balanced? The vibration from an unbalanced blade probably doesn't do the coil any good.

I have found that heat is a coils worst enemy. Making sure that your cooling fins and baffles are kept clean, so air can freely flow from the flywheel out should help. Haven't seen where Lawn Boy has a greater problem than anyone else.

No..it is an electronic circuit with diodes and an SCR. The coil is just part of it, and the coil part usually doesn't go bad, but if the other items inside go bad, the whole thing won't work. Not fixable.
