what different transmissions will fit my mower?

I have a Honda mower that needs to have its transmission replaced. I have had the mower over 18 years and I can't locate my owners manual for the model number. My black tag reads "HR 215-GC" and my serial number starts with "MZAM-6223xxx". It is rear wheel propelled, shaft drive. My question is what is the part number that is the replacement or a workable solution?

Is this a hydrostatic (variable speed) model or gear drive 2/3 speed model? The formal model name is "HR215HXA" or "HR216SXA" The serial number indicates this is probably a K1 model (second version built). Honda does not offer any rebuilt or alternative transmissions for this mower. You might get lucky and find a used one (Craigslist) with a bad engine / good transmission.

A whole new trans for the hydrostatic drive is Honda Part Number 20001-VD6-305, list price $294.61
A whole new trans for the gear drive is Honda Part Number 2001-VD6-J04, list price $313.42

If you can troubleshoot / inspect it and find the fault, some individual internal parts are available for both models. If you dig that deep, a shop manual (paper copies) is strongly recommended. Honda sells them on eBay and Amazon, about $37, free shipping.

I'm uncertain of the model number, I've misplaced the manual years ago. I bought the mower new in 1995. Other than the markings I've mentioned previously; the engine cover reads "Masters 5.0", it is a three speed running off a shaft, an aluminum deck, with rear discharge/bag. The transmission failed on the installment plan, one speed at a time over several years with the last speed giving out this past weekend. I looked at the transmission several years ago and found metal in the fluid, topped it off and ran it ever since.

After 19 seasons I have ordered a new HRX217HYA, but I wanted to pass my warhorse to my daughter who has recently purchased her first home. So I'm looking for a used transmission that will fit and function to give my daughter a solid first mower. Thanks for the help.
