My mower randomly dies when I am mowing-already replaced fuel filter, new carb, spark plug and so forth last fall. Did not help. My next guess is the coil. I see from the schematic (I am looking at boats.net but schematics same on all sites-sorry could not get it to copy over) there are 3 coils, two under the flywheel (7 and 15) and one on outside of flywheel (3). Since the outside one is the one that provides the spark plug spark, I intend to replace that one. This is my question. There are two coil assemblies part numbers on item #3. One is 30500-zf5-l31 part # 4789475 listed as SUP: Coil Assy, and the other is 30500-ZF5-L32 part # 7088271 listed as PRI: Coil Assy. It seems last time I had this thing apart, I only remember one coil on the outside of the flywheel, which would be the one with the spark plug wire. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between L31 and L32. Are there really two coils on the outside of the flywheel? If so, which one should I be replacing? What am I missing in this picture? While I am at it, what is the gap between coil and flywheel?

30500-ZF5-L32 is the most current part number for the ignition coil; connects to the spark plug lead, mounts outside the flywheel. Air gap is 0.4 +/- 0.2 mm (0.016 +/-0.008 in)
30500-ZF5-L31 is the older part number for the ignition coil. If you order "-L31" will probably get -L32"

31630-ZE2-841 is the charge coil, which charges the battery. Mounts under the flywheel.

31510-ZF5-M01 us the light coil, which powers the headlights. Mounts under the flywheel. (H2113 only, H2013 did not have headlights, and did not have this light coil).

I'd only suggest replacing the ignition coil if (a) the spark plug test with a new plug fails. (b) be sure to only check for spark with the parking brake set ON. A failed safety interlock can create a "no-spark" situation. This is also possible with a failed seat switch too. Be sure all relays and switches are testing good and you should get a good spark. If not, then I'd consider replacing the coil.

Thank you for clearing that up. The L31 and L32 was throwing me. Also thanks for the gap setting. I checked the spark last fall, with my wife sitting on the seat hitting the switch. I guess I did not know that I could have just set the park brake instead of having her sitting on the seat. Anyway, I need to get a few more years out of this mower to beat the 20+ years I had with my 1966 Wheelhorse 1276 hydrostatic. That thing is probably a collector's item now. Again, thanks for your help.
