i've got a 2000 white gt 2550 with 50 inch deck and a briggs 25hp twin.Last year the transmission beltbroke which i have replaced once before with no problems. This time after putting it back together it wont start and im fairly certain it was re installed properly. if i remove the pto it will want to start.
Also since ive owned the mower it can be hard to start from time to time and if i put my battery booster on it,it will start fine.I know the battery is fine and has been replaced and i keep it on trickle charge when not it use for extended time period

Don't know if you have open, but here is any operator manual for your unit which will show the belt routing.

http://www.equiprentals.info/rental/equipment/landscaping/operator_manuals/GT2550H.pdf

If it does not spin freely when trying to start, you may have a ground problem. Start by checking all grounds, battery, chassis, solenoid, and starter.

If it spins freely, look to see if the choke is closing fully. If all these things are good, post back with a better description of what your are seeing and doing to solve the problem. Remember you are our eyes, ears, and fingers, because we are not there.

The belt is routed properly and as far as i can tell there isnt a ground issue. you put the pto unit back on the crank shaft it won't want to start, and if you take it off it will.

Sounds like the PTO may be frozen. With the PTO installed, but no belt, will it start.

Because I am not there to see what is going on and your posts confuse me, I'm going to ask questions that may offend you. Sorry in advance, I'm just trying to help. If you're offended just tell me to get lost and I'm sorry to waste your time.

1. With the PTO off can you move the inner bearing freely? I ask this to see if the PTO is frozen when not energized.

2. With the PTO installed turn the key to the run position and then engage the PTO switch. Do you hear the PTO click and engage? I ask this to see if the PTO is being energized.

3. Is the PTO installed correctly, with the aligning pin in the proper slot, tob or hole?

4. With the PTO installed, you say the engine will not start. Does it spin over freely or not at all?

5. I know you said that the battery is good, but have you tried jump starting the unit with the PTO installed?

6. Have you checked all the grounds and connections and grounds, or just assume the the electrical system is found because it will start with the PTO off? You have to realize that when I am trying to help people with electrical problems, I never assume anything, until I am sure.

7. I know that many of these questions make no sense, but just changing a belt should not cause an engine not to start. I will not rule anything out until I am sure.

I asked if the inner bearing spins freely in the clutch when the PTO is off. Also, let's not do this one test at a time. It will take to long.

1 when the pto off the bearings spin freely
2. with the pto intalled properly the engine will not start or spin freely
3 you can hear the pto click as if it is being energized
4 i have used a jump starter

as far as i can tell the eletrical system is fine,i'm just asking for things to look for

I know that you are looking to solve this problem, but I am 1000 miles away and you are my eyes, ears and hands. I am trying to picture what you are seeing, hearing and touching. This does not make sense and there is something simple we are missing. Would you disconnect the PTO while it is installed and see if it will spin. I want to make sure that there is no electrical problem. If it would spin freely and start, then we know that there is an electrical problem. If it does not spin freely, then we have to look at installation or clutch problem.
