Two things can cause a regulator to go bad. One is a bad stator, use the procedure in the manual posted to check it both statically and dynamticly. Second is not having a good solid ground on the regulator. If the ground is not constant, the regulator will operate improperly, causing it to short out. At times I have added a second ground wiring to regulators to make sure that it is grounded at all times.
thanks for the info but upon further checking i found a fuse broken in the wiring harness. not blown but the plastic was broken causing it to lose contact . maybe this will help someone else .
