Valve stem cap?

Hi all,

I have a question regarding my Snapper LE1433H Riding mower (B & S 14HP 287707-1228-E1).

I was checking the cylinder head for valve-seat defects, for an entirely different issue, and I seem to have lost one of the caps (or whatever they are called) that slides on the end of the valve stem. The cap is a circular piece of aluminum. Is this cap a must-have? Because I spent 3 hours scouring the floor and couldn't find it anywhere. If it is necessary, where can they be bought? I looked on a few different parts websites and looked at the official parts list for the engine and the cap was nowhere to be found. As far as I can tell, the cap just provides a larger, flatter surface for the rocker arm to interact with. If the caps aren't necessary, can I just take off the one I have and adjust the valve clearances to stock in between the stem and rocker? I figured I'd ask before I mess up the situation further.

If my description isn't good enough, I can get some pictures of the part in question at your request.

All help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
