Just took the head off, looking for a blown head gasket and found one............ I didn't even need a valve spring compressor to remove the valves. I was able to just push down on them with my hands, fairly easy to compress.......

This isn't normal is it???

Sure but you have to hold the valve face in at the same time. A valve spring compressor is so much easier
