valve seat came out, do I just tap it back in?

i had a 5.5 briggs come in with zero compression, i took the head off and the intake valve seat was off, i just tapped it back in place with a flat punch, it started on the 1st pull. Will it hold or should i install it with something (adhesive) to hold it in? also why did it fall out?

It is unusual for the intake seat to come out. Normally it is due to excessive heat. You should of peened around the edges to hold it is place after reinstallation, with a center punch to push the aluminum over the top edge of the seat.

Agree with ILENGINE. I have seen it many times in aluminum, but in cast iron as well. Quite a few old, heavy duty cast iron engines had replaceable seats, and some of them loosened as well. The peening expands the material around the seat to tighten it in place. Don't remember any that couldn't be repaired with this technique.

i peened the aluminum around the seat and installed a new gasket. all is well. Mower starts on 1st pull.

You have suffered a common problem with AC alumiinum heads. The guys are right about overheat.
I doubt the peening will last. Chances are the aluminum has been softened so the guides may also act up ( move). How much is new head? VW,Corvair...on and on common problem. Sorry.

I think the problem is that aluminum expands at a different rate than does steel. I remember seeing how they install a steel sleeve in an aluminum block. They heat the block (much higher temp than operating temp) and the sleeve slips right in, and when it cools the sleeve is tight.
