I saw this on craigslist. ECHO SRM-230 17" 2-CYCLE GAS STRING Grass TRIMMER Straight Shaft
It says it doesn't run at full throttle, but I read that that could be the spark screen thing, or the carburetor adjustment. I thought that maybe if I could get him down to $30 it might be at least fun to mess with, and hopefully get running well again. Does anyone have any experience with these trimmers, and are they any good? Thanks.

I ran the SRM 210 which is basically the same thing and it's a decent trimmer not great. The screen thing is the Spark Arresting Screen and it probably needs cleaning. The thing is if it's the carb you'll have to take it to the dealer to be worked on because it will take special tools that you can't get.

If you get lucky and it turns out to be the spark plug and screen causing the problem then for $30 you probably don't do bad but if it is the carb and you have to take it to the dealer and get it adjusted or a new carb with the $65 an hour bench rate the deal goes south and it ends up hanging on the wall for parts.

I think you'll be fine prolly carbon in the exhaust and remove the screen or worst case order a new carb and still be ok

I went to check it out, and unfortunately he was firm on the $50, so no trimmer for me. I did tell him that two of the fuel lines were missing, so maybe I was at least able to help him out to get it running again. It's always nice to share knowledge! Makes me feel all fuzzy inside.:cloud9:

If he's incapable of seeing missing fuel lines... I don't think I would trust this machine anyway

That's true, and he also said it came from some auction, so it was good to pass.
