I have 4 2 cycle devices, 2=40:1 and 2=50:1. My problem is I do not use enough of either to mix up 2 separate gallons. My Sthil dealer sold me some universal oil that should work with anything to 50:1, but the 40:1 trimmer does not seem to like it as well. Any suggestions? Would the 40:1 work in my Sthil chain saw and Ryobi trimmer? I use good quality alcohol free gas for the mix. A gallon will last all Summer. I have a chain saw, 2 trimmers, and a mini tiller. I a perfect I would get Sthil brand everything.

The 40:1 should be fine in all your equipment. the little extra oil may cause some extra smoke but not bad. the manufacturers will tell you that by adding extra oil can cause the engine to run lean. If 1% less gas causes a lean run problem, in my opinion the engine is already too lean.

When I had a very old blower that used 32:1 and my trimmer used 50:1 I just went to Wal-Mart and purchased a glass measuring cup and mixed 1/2 gallons at a time. It sucked once a year but that only lasted for a few minutes when I mixed it at the first of the year. I do not believe in universal oil. It is a sales gimmick.

I just started running about 40:1 *synthetic* in everything. Seems to be fine in both my LawnBoy and the Stihl. The old Homelite trimmer would run on kerosene and sand! ;) Damn thing just won't die.

My LawnBoy seems to run a little better on 40:1 than it did at 32:1. Sure doesn't clog the ports or muffler as much as it used to, ashless or not.

I have run the Stihl in a pinch on LawnBoy 32:1 in the past. It ran OK, just more smoke. The synthetic 40:1 is fine. No more smoke than 50:1 in my opinion.... or at least as far as I can tell.
