I am messing around a bit with an old RER and I thought that the Rustoleum farm implement paint in International red was a good fit.
What impressed me the most about this paint is that even when there was a bit of grease that i failed to clean off the housings, the paint just melted it right into itself and still stuck tightly to the steel. The tell tale sign was the little black streaks in the paint.
The second coat just covered it right up. Of course,I am not talking about being careless with your clean-up, and this was not a large amount of grease. Most paints would have fish-eyed in a situation like this.
The second test was the underside of the seat-- A lot of loose rust was sanded down to make the rust "tight'. I did not use primer and the paint really penetrated into the surface. The second coat sealed it up very nicely.
I used a foam brush on this project with very good results. This is not to say that this is the best way to do things as I like to use a spray gun and proper prep work on most of my projects. It is just to point out that this paint is really good stuff and forgives your mistakes.
I need to try this paint with proper primer prep and add hardener -- I think the results of a spray coat would be awesome.
