PTO fails to disengage all the way. Blades continue to turn.

Here is where a model and serial number would be very helpful, so we can see what deck you have and where the possible problem may be.

In parts list items 47 & 50, pto spring extension & pto bearing, check them out for replacement, sloppy play in bearing & broken or stretched out spring.

Make sure to use an OEM MTD belt if not using one now. I would start by making sure there is no grass buildup on the deck, and make sure the pivot arm with the idler pulleys on it isn't binding. Sounds like the arm may not be moving all the way and not fully releasing the belt.

Thank you for the input. I had already checked the pivot arm and lubed underneith it. No improvement. I can move the arm by hand, but not with the PTO lever. Maybe the return sping and/or cable is the vilian. What's your thinking? I will check replacemart parts prices while I await more input. Happy mowing to ond and all. LRR
