need part # 397266 fuel solenoid and Briggs and Stratton tell me they no longer make. So now what??? checked e-bay and other sights but can 't find one anywhere. Does any one have idea on
what to do next???? thanks

Do you have a pic of the solenoid? Why do you think it has gone bad?

wire connector broke off and there is no way to reconnect to solenoid

I had a mower in last week where the solenoid was stuck and no amount of cleaning would unstick it. Someone in the shop came over and cut the plunger off with a pair of heavy wire cutters and said try it now. I reinstalled it and the mower ran fine. I never would have thought to do that but it certainly worked in this case. I would love to know if anyone else has done the same before. The solenoids job is to shut the fuel off to prevent backfiring so it's not needed for the mower to run. You can minimize the likelihood of backfiring by reducing your throttle input to low before shutting off the mower. It would be a good idea to install an in-line fuel shutoff valve and shut it off after each use. Hope this helps and good luck!!

I took a small nut and put it on the plunger which held it open but it work just installed a fuel shutoff

Part of the purpose for the solenoid is to prevent excess gas from flooding the crankcase and potentially getting into a hot muffler which could cause a fire. Safety first!!

The fuse shutoff solenoid has on purpose and one purpose only. That is to help prevent the afterfire bang when you shut it off. If you have a fuel leak in the carb, the solenoid will have absolutely no effect on even slowing down the leak. The gas will flow up through the bowl vent, and still fill the carb, cylinder, crankcase, and run into the muffler. I hate it when people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

A fuel shutoff valve will prevent gas from filling the engine if the carb leaks, but is just a bandaid on a simple problem.

Adding a fuel shut off valve seems to be the common solution to most problems involving fuel leaks. It is posted by individuals who do not understand how fuel systems components work, or how to troubleshoot and repair these components. But I ask this question, what will happen if you forget to use it? These bandaid repairs can lead to an amputation or worse an expensive surgery. My advice, listen to ILengine, do it the right way first time.
