Troy Bilt BIG RED 54" questions

Finding info on this mower has been near impossible for me. 1998 Model #39353 14AZ809K766.
Briggs INTEK 24hp twin V OHV that runs badly. I think they call it "surging" and may be caused by carburetor issues.

Can I use a smaller deck on this mower? I have applications where the 54" is just too big.
Can I use a 50" TROY deck and swap out between the two decks???

pages 40 & 41 shows 46" deck, new belts will also be required

post all engine numbers if B&S engine for carburetor or rebuild kit, model xxxxxx, type xxxx, trim xx & code number from data plate or sticker etc. on engine.

Thanks Mark! so you ARE saying I can use a smaller deck? I just have to clarify.
I had downloaded the exploded views for my mower from the Troy site but I didn't for some reason have the Manual, so thank you for that.
I will get the numbers off my B&S engine for the carburetor or rebuild kit. Thank you for your guidance.

have a look through these, 46" deck part number has been changed to 983-04121A, even though they say no shipping you can contact them & say you'll pay shipping if you're interested.
