Hello I just finished working on a 290 given to me by my father. I had to change the fuel line, and vacuum line. I also cleaned the carberator.it ran last weekend after some time I finally got it to idle. Today I replace the fuel which I ran it out being told that is the way to store it .It will crank on full choke. switch it to half choke it runs wide open for a few seconds then cuts out.it bogs down when giving it throttle. Does the jets need to be adjusted? I have a local dealer but moneys tight right now. Thank you for your time.

if it bogs down when you throttle it up, it could be the spark arrestor screen in the muffler. take a propane torch, or even a regular lighter and heat the thing up until it gets red hot. it will burn all the carbon off and hopefully that will be the fix.

Take the carb off again and repost. I'll go through step by step, you have to clean/rebuild the carb correctly, I'll work you through it with pics.

Sorry, I got busy today. Take the needle/spring/lever off, and hold the carb body up to a light and look through that passage, then blow it out, then look
through it again, it usually gets choked up with crud.

well I got it running.still has a little trouble idling.once it warms up it will stay running.I believe it just takes a while to reprime after it runs out of fuel?

Well, just turn the adjustments to the left a tad. You really should go through the carb completely like I described, but it sounds like you just have a
small obstruction, so running with some fresh fuel might bring it around.

how do you adjust these carbs? is it the 1/4 and 3/4 turn the case has depicted on the side?

Here is a carb like you will find on an MS290, those red thingees are limiter caps that can be yanked out so you can adjust the carb better. But you don't want to adjust a carb to try and compensate for dirt/clogs, that will just toast a good saw.

You can remove the caps by threading a drywall screw in a tad and yanking...

ok I have it all apart and am going to put a kit in. i have removed everything except those red caps. I tried to blow thru all the orifices I could get to.where is the crud you are talking about located?I actually have an 029 but the carb is the same.

Remove both sides, and remove the spring/lever/needle like I did in the pics.

The passage under the needle to the screen on the other side is likely choked up, hold it to a light, then blow it out, then hold it up again.
