transmission problems with my JD 735

I have a JD 735 that was used. It has a 60 inch deck on the front, and I am now having problems with the hydro drive. There is a dip stick under the seat, and when I experienced the mower slowing down and billowing a lot of smoke out the exhaust, and the blades slowed down, I checked that dip stick. I found that there was very little liquid on the end of the stick. My question is: Does this mower take Hydro fluid or engine oil in the transmission? I do not have a service manual, hence the reason for the question.

John Deere requires the hydro fluid they sell. Call them and they will tell you what they call it. If you find the numbers on the hydro unit and report back I will look up what the manufacture of the hydros requires. It will normally cost about $10.00 less per quart. This will be a great time to change it out as you do not know when it was done before.

This site, https://jdparts.deere.com/partsmkt/...ene/fb_MaintSheet_F735_60_deckLawnTractor.pdf ,says it takes TY6354 Hygard and that is a 1 gallon jug and it takes 1.5 gallon. The number for a 2.5 gallon jug is TY22062.
This site, http://www.greenpartstore.com/John-Deere-Hy-Gard-Transmission-and-Hydraulic-Oil-TY6354-TY22062.html ,tells about Hygard. It is John Deere oil and says Hy-Gard oil can be used in most applications calling for 10W-30 or 5W-30 engine oil for transmission and hydraulic oils.

You should probably use the Hygard oil rather than 10W-30 motor oil as the JD oil probably has special additives in it. I would call a JD dealer or repair place and ask if plain motor oil would work.
