I gave my 3 year old walk behind (self propelled) mower to my 'all thumbs' son last year. When I saw him last July, he was using his neighbor's walk behind mower. I asked him what was wrong with the one I gave him. "Won't start', is all I got. I was kind of surprised as I had it serviced just before I gave it to him and it ran fine at that time. Well, I let it go, but this weekend, I picked the mower up from him and brought it back to my house, to see if I could get it running. Here's what I found:

1. The mower runs as long as you're putting carb cleaner directly into the carb. Stops as soon as it uses the available fuel supply.
2. Since it runs, I know it's got spark (pulled the plug to make sure it was properly gapped).
3. The air filter is clean.
4. Proper oil level.
5. Checked to ensure the screen at the bottom of the gas tank was clear - it is.

Now, I'm assuming that there's a blockage somewhere in the fuel line, but I can't see how to get the line off the point that goes into the carb.

Two questions:

1. How do you get that darn line off? There's no space at all in there to even get a needle nose pliers in to squeeze the clamp.
2. Could it have something to do with the float bowl? I'm suspecting he turned the mower on it's side with the carb downward, introducing engine oil into the carb and float bowl.

Any info on this would be helpful. Thanks!

Let me repeat a post from another thread that might just get you the help you need. Please follow it.

Since this is a help forum, it is only fair that the people trying to answer questions have some information to work with, so they can give an accurate answer. This helps them if they need to research parts or service information on your engine or equipment. In the first part of your post please include your engine numbers from the ID tag or stamping and the equipment type and model numbers that are on it. Failure to do this may result in you not receiving any accurate help with your problem.

Many of the tech's that hang out here work in or have there own shops and the first thing they do when they make up a work order on a unit is include the engine and equipment numbers on the work order. Since this technical forum is offered free to the public, it's the least we can ask you to do, so please help all of us out. *So please post the numbers in the new topic you start to ask your question. It should be the first thing you write before beginning your question. :D

You are correct that it is a fuel problem, but it is hard for us to help until we know which type of carb you have.

you need to clean the carburetor for starters, watch youtube for step by step. briggs engine is easy to remove carb, clean it with carb cleaner, compressed air, run wire through all orfaces. and reinstall. clean fuel system as well, remove air cleaner and air cleaner housing to get to carb and fuel line. be csreful with gaskets and o rings.
