Briggs engine 121S02-0310-F1

So I just inherited a TORO time master 30” mower. I’m very excited to use it on our big lawn, but it was hydro locked. So I let it drain, changed the oil, and I got it started. Some smoke but not too bad and it burned off. I engaged the self propel, an ENORMOUS cloud of white smoke and it sputtered and died. Hydrolocked again.

1. Oil is clearly getting places it shouldn’t, any ideas why?
2. What are the most common reasons a small engine would do this?

I can clean a carburetor, or fix other minor things, am I going to have to learn how to change a head gasket?

Check air filter for replacement. Check oil dipstick for smell of gas, if so rebuild carburetor with OEM Kit or purchase new carburetor.

Float needle is not seating properly. Clean and rebuild the carb with a new float needle and seat. Briggs part number 398188. Make sure you level the float properly. If you need instructions please post back.

"white smoke" Was the cylinder full of oil, water, or fuel?
