My Toro model 20334 is a real bear to pull backwards. Seems like I'm pulling against the self propel. Tried adjusting traction cable 16 ways to Sunday...of little help.
Any ideas what's going on other than this drive being a really poor design ?
Pulling the outer cable back toward you should release the the tranny, taking tension off the belt. Maybe section 9 of this manual will help you out. https://www.toro.com/getpub/22446

there are like 11 variants of that model. Better post a serial number.
Did you ever figure out why your mower was hard to pull backwards? The drive system on newer Toro's is different than older ones. They no longer use the directional drive gears with spring loaded woodruff keys on the drive shaft ends. The drive gears are a rectangle slot with no spring loaded keys. The drive gears do no look directional.

No problem currently as the mower is still relatively new. I bought a service manual directly from Honda for my Honda self-propelled, but I was looking for a service manual for my Toro.
