so I recently bought a toro lx 460 with a kohler courage 20 hp that was for fix or repair. The problem was it smoked oil when it started but when engaged it would spew oil everywhere. It had a leak from the valve cover. So i replaced the carburator, vavle cover gasket and since i did all that I replaced the head gasket as well it came in one kit. I assembled it back together and set the valves to spec.My problem i have now is that the starter won't start the motor when it has compression and smokes under load. I remove the spark plug and the starter works as it should with no compression. Thank you for any tips.

just to be sure, You did set the valves to .005" intake and .007" exhaust
