The Self-Propel" on my Toro 22" Recycler quit and after diagnosis I found that the bevel gear in the transmission had worn. There was not grease in the transmission case, it was pack full of lawn debris.
I would have liked to have found just the gear to replace but I went on line at Toro.com and found the whole transmission assembly for about $70.
I checked Amazon and found the part sold by Lcpower for $46 plus $5.99 shipping. The part arrived in a couple of days, I installed it and all is good.
One problem that I encountered that may save some others trouble is removing the pulley on the old part. The new transmission assmly doesn't come with a pulley.
The only way I found to remove the bolt holding the pully was to remove the transmission assembly from the mower, remove the four bolts holding the bottom plate on the gear housing and holding the bevel gear with a 15/16" socket while turning the pulley nut. I had seen a number of posts on other sites with people having the pulley removal problem but no solutions were offered.
Hopefully this post can save people some $$ and aggravation.
Thank you JWA! I had the same problem with my Toro 20016 (removing the pulley nut to change the transmission assembly) but followed your advice and it worked!
