Timing Problem?

Good morning,

I'm new to the forum, a long time old Cub Cadet owner but much of a lawnmower size small engine guy so I really appreciate the information and expertize I've found in this forum. I can usually figure out a problem but I've got one that's got me stumped.

My son has a Craftsman 6.5 with a Tecumseh series 11 carb. while he was mowing some tall grass, the mower stopped and would not start again. He tried everything and finally brought it out to me. I've tried everything I know and I can't figure it out. I'ts getting a spark so I pulled the carb and cleaned it up, still nothing, not even a pop. The crank is turning and the valves are operating, it has compression. I've surfed this site and now I'm wondering if the sudden stop could have broken the key and the mower is out of time. Is there any way of checking this without pulling the shroud and starter assembley?

Thanks for your assistance.

Tony

You will need to remove the starter, blower housing and the flywheel to check the key.
