Having a few problems with my Timemaster with B&S 121S02-0026-F1.

First problem is it is hard to start, takes several real good pulls (sometimes 7-10) to get it going. Once going it sounds like it is running well. If I turn it off after it is warm it is still tough to start. Carb was just cleaned.

Second issue is sometimes when engage the blades the engine will quit.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Yes I have a thought. Have you tried using a starting or tune up spray when first starting? If so does that improve the starting?
Have you tested or replaced the coil? As far as blades quitting remember on the Timemaster the blades must be engaged
slowly. Have you checked the RPM's to make sure you are running correct RPM to prevent engine quitting when engaging the blades.

More than likely you will need to clean the carb again, either by using an ultrasonic cleaner or soaking it over night. Replace the float needle and make sure that the float level is set slightly rich.

Thanks for the replies!

Couple things I have discovered since my first post. The previous owner must have stripped the spark plug threads and tried to fix it by installing a helicoil. I have a parts engine and I am in the process of replacing the head.

I have not tested the coil yet, but will do that and try cleaning the carb even though it looks brand new inside.

Any other ideas?

Omg. Check flywheel key also if that's the issue the timing could be off. You could always pull plug and pour a small amount of gas, (tablespoon) into chamber and see if it starts right up. Then carb is likely clogged, dirty, simply worn out.

Update:

I replaced the head and head gasket. Regapped the coil because it had way to much gap. Valve lash on the new head were perfectly spaced and a new spark plug. During the process I noticed there was a lot of resistance on the governor linkage and apparently the flywheel guard had been bent down.

After all was done she started in the first pull. Thanks for all the input!
