Tiger Cub Hydro Oil Filter P/N 48462-01 Issue

Replacing the Hydro Oil Filter P/N 48462-01 on my Tiger Cub and having an issue. The Filter is an OEM and it seems the threads are too deep in the Filter to thread onto the Filter Housing. I bought the Machine used and it currently has the same OEM P/N Filter on it now. Also tried a Stens Filter and had the same issue. Has anyone run into this issue?

Thanks,
Bob

The threaded nipple that the filter screws onto is removable and it may be screwed in too far. Unscrew it some so the filter will thread onto the filter head assembly. Get the model and serial number from the machine, go to the Scag website, click on manuals on the L/H column, find your model and serial number group. You can download this as a pdf file and save it in your documents. Find the fuel and hydraulics pages to see what I'm referring to.

Yes, it does appear the threaded nipple is in too far. Also, looked at my manual and I see what you are talking about. Now the trick will be to unscrew the nipple some, it is very tight. Thank you so much for the help, I really appreciate it.

Take care,

Hi Bob,
Get a mirror and a flashlight and look up into the nipple from the bottom, it may have a hex shaped hole in the inside. If so, you can put an Allen wrench up into the nipple and turn it. If not, then I would look into the parts manual for the thread size, get two nuts of that size, thread them onto the nipple and tighten them against each other with two wrenches and then unscrew the nipple to increase its length enough to comfortably engage the filter when installed. You can put a straightedge across the filter gasket and measure down to the bottom of the female threads in the filter to get an idea of how much exposed thread you should unscrew the nipple.
Another thought, the female threads in the filter head assembly should have been cut so as to leave a lip that would stop the nipple at the correct position. The previous owner may have forced on a filter of the wrong thread and while doing so overtightened the nipple forcing it to break thru the lip in the filter head assembly, something to think about!!

Didn't find a hex shaped hole inside the nipple. Only had about 1/2" of nipple to work with and used a couple of wraps of emery cloth and a Channel Lock Plier to loosen it and back it out. Swapped the nipple end for end, installed the new Filter and back in buisness. I'm new to the forum and can't thank you enough for your help!

Take care,
