I have a craftsman lt2000 with a 17.5 hp b&s engine. When it starts, it will only run on idle. I have a fuel valve but I'm pretty sure the electric shut off solenoid is working( I tested it and it disengages when the switch is on). With the engine in idle and the shut off valve open, the mower will start and spits and sputter. If I try to increase the throttle it will die. If I close the shut of valve about 90%, it will idle smoothly but if I increase the throttle it will die. I changed the fuel filter, it had trash in it, and I also pulled the carb and cleaned out bowl and blew air through of it and still the same results. Is it the carb? Or could it be another issue?

Your post is a bit confusing concerning the shut-off valve operation ....... if you found dirt in the fuel system, suggest you remove gas tank and fuel lines, filter, and shut-off valve , REPLACE them, and be sure to thoroughly clean the tank, I believe you have a Nikki 1 Barrel carb on that engine, (17.5 Briggs OHV) follow the cleaning tips in the following link, AND be be sure to take pictures of ALL carburetor linkages BEFORE working on your machine keep us posted .........
