T2500 / 917.20378 Rear Axle issues/leaking

My T2500 has started leaking fluid out one of the transaxle wheel shaft seals. It appears the unit has no orifice to be able to add axle fluid/gear oil to top it off. I have been unable to find any info on the transaxle to research, specifically which part number applies to the axle to look for repairs or replacements. Can anyone assist in locating the part number of this unit and if I can replace the seals and top off the fluid? It has made the tractor very iffy to go in reverse, and only okay going forward. Runs great otherwise, the Kohler engine is smooth and strong.

Going by your model number that machine uses a plastic general transmission. I have spoke to them before about fluid for those and was told there is no fill. They also told me that the fluid that had leaked out wouldnt be enough to cause an issue but idk if I buy it. Those transmissions dont do well once they are covered in grass and dirt.

That is the truth.. Remember long I had one, Dana POS.. I swapped in a Peerless that worked fine & then sold the mower.

I know if enough fluid leaks out then the transmission won't work well, which is the issue I'm having. Reverse gets super iffy especially as the trans is warmed up. I'd replace if I could find a reasonable priced good one, but need part # if anyone can identify.

Do you recall what the transaxle part # was, or where I can locate?

Sorry that was very long ago... I can't recall.

There should be a tag with a part number on the case somewhere

Make sure you price what one of these plastic transaxles costs. It will be more than the mower is worth. Plus you have the time or labor to remove and replace.

I would try to drill a hole in top of plastic housing and add 20W-50 synthetic oil as needed. Make hole large enough to get fill tube and screwdriver in to check oil (1” from top is full). Install a plug/screw/something in fill hole and run it.

Come on you dummies...The GTI RS800 series uses grease not oil. And there are instructions for adding it without opening the case.

And someone beside me should just look up the GTI RS800F and give the OP the PN for the axle seals. Or are there any real shops on this forum???

I have the info but will not post it due to insults I have received. As I said I retired from giving most help on this forum. Now I just getting kicks out of how uninformed some members are that are just throwing something out just to be posting. Come on guys if you know what you posting about post it but if you are just guessing don't post. Guessing just gets everyone in trouble.

If it uses grease like Star says, I'd drill a hole for a grease zerk, and then pump a lot of grease in. Grease generally separates just a little bit to liquid, so you still may have leakage, but it should stop any parts wear. Put a cardboard under it...

This, I believe, is the cheapest and easiest way to go if you just want it running and operable as long as possible, and at the cheapest cost, with the easiest fix.

I wouldn't buy expensive grease, maybe someone can say what cheaper type of grease to use.

Just think it can look this bad and still the unit won't need any added grease.

Was that the OP's picture? Likely the OP's leak is not that bad. I would try a zerk on a machine that I wouldn't want to put a lot of work into...and maybe stack a bunch of felt washers between the wheel and the case to slow to almost nothing.

You those felt washers are probably going cost more than the $6 seal and still don't fix the problem.

It's unfortunate that everyone that posts on this forum is not an expert like you think you are.
But, you are entertaining.

Well does 40+ yrs in the business account for anything? Especially since I currently the only one here that does everything from repairs to all the other business related items. But as I said that after being insulted several times on this forum I have quit giving freely of my knowledge (including actual file info) and experience.

Thanks for just another insult...But as usual posting bad info is a normal on most forums. You know there still people that thinks the Earth is flat, Are you one of them?

Service manual- https://services.generaltransmissio...ads/pdfs/service-manuals/39008-D1 RS800 P.pdf

Seal pn GT41857 for axel shafts, did not see a fill procedure, but belt adjustment may help.

Check out troubleshooting guide- https://services.generaltransmissions.com/en/troubleshooting/rs800/

Disassembly and reassembly- https://www.google.com/search?q=GTI...ate=ive&vld=cid:f789d13a,vid:_VPSLaM-y4k,st:0

Looks like inversion kit is a high reapir item and has been updated. Best of luck.

Now that more like it MowerNick and Freddie21. Good info posted.

Freddie21 look at MowerNick post number 13 for the grease fill procedure.

The only thing missing is the service manual RS800F supplement which is needed for the OP's unit. F = Fender operated P = Pedal operated

It all boils down to how much money and time the OP wants to put into it. A lot or a little. It almost sounds like the unit could be toast by his description of how it operates.

Just because there are experts here also doesn't mean all people want it expertly done per manufacture repair procedures at a high cost, or enough that it will run and be dependable for the unit's life. Sounds like not a lot of life on this one.

I had an old, old rototiller a while back with the gearbox that leaked. On that, I pumped the gearbox full of grease, with a little gear oil to thin it somewhat, put some cheap felt seals with washers to keep it snug on the shafts, and that thing lasted until I stopped gardening, and I sold it. All depends if you can get parts, and how much you want to put into it.

I'd also watch craigslist or somewhere for a different trans unit.

I recently was gifted a 2014 craftsman T3000 with the RS 800 transmission. Axle seals were leaking bad. Ordered 2 from Amazon and installed. I put some gasket maker on the seals before installing and problem solved.

I have no issues with the time or work, just wanted to know my options and best info. This is now a second tractor, it was purchased while I had my JD 155c apart for refurbishment. That one is up and running like a champ. The Craftsman runs good, just gonna get the trans (fender controlled) working properly and it will be used for other yard chores besides mowing. Wife likes it better than the JD, fits her better. So, it'll haul a trailer for weed pulling and dumping, with a backup as the yard cutter should the JD need a break...
I appreciate those who shared info, and will get seals first, see if that helps. Then move to more if necessary.
