Swapping engine on Husky YTH20K46

I'm replacing the engine on my Husky after the original Kohler Courage shelled and the replacement engine came without the mounting holes tapped.

The original bolts appear to be thread forming style but I'm hesitant to just drive them in for fear of breaking the block. The bolts do not have a thread cutting edge the are pointed washer faced cap screws that on which the threads come to a point. the threads extend all the way to the tip of the bolt

Three of the four holes are blind holes which might enter the crankcase if they were to crack.

Are these typical? Is it safe to drive them in with an electric impact driver with a socket attachment?

Many thanks!

I just finished replacing an engine on a Craftsman gt4000. The mount bolts were what you discribed. I had no problem other than the bolts being very hard to thread in, they cut the threads fine.

Thanks Jeff that is reassuring.

This is an old thread but I'm about to undertake a similar engine swap, probably to install a Briggs & Stratton in place of the Kohler. What engine did you go with? Any rewiring required?

I ended going with another Kohler engine I bought on Ebay from Small engine warehouse. It was the same family as the original engine but a 19 HP for a Craftsman instead of what I think was 21HP on the one on the mower from the factory.

The Craftsman and the Husky I have are pretty much the same mower, it bolted right up and the wiring was the same. Only difference I could see was the new wan had a diaphragm type fuel pump and the original was gravity feed only on the fuel line.

New one has been fine.
