I am getting up in years and push mowing my yard is starting to be too much. I always heard how great John Deere Mowers were. I can't afford anything new. What would you recommend that I could buy for around $500. I probably only need about a 38" cut. Don't want anything that requires a lot of shifting. Need a decent turning radius.

Thanks for your suggestions

I would recommend checking up on craigslist sometimes there are great deals you have to act quick though and its going to be a bit of a challenge for only 500 but there are still a few great options including Husqvarna, Toro, or Snapper also im not sure how reliable the JDs are but test any used mower BEFORE YOU BUY.

Ryan is correct! Looking for a bargain... but condition is still everything. So choose wisely!

You can buy a new quality self propelled 21" machine with collection for the money that you mention. Smaller machine, lighter in weight and easier to store than a 30" machine.
Just my thoughts!!!

I agree with Ryan, check on Craigs List for bargains. I would be careful however and choose wisely, but you never know how lucky you will get. Another place you might want to check is garage sales and small engine shops. I was approached by a co-worker who I had no idea owned a used JD rider. It was an older 2006 JD 125 and he used to use it to mow some property. Even being a 2006 model, it only had 157 hours on it, but it was filthy and moldy from being stored in his barn for a few years. Even so, it did start and he sold it to me for $200. One of my other co-workers needed one, so I resold it to him for the same amount. He power washed it and did an oil change, belt change, air & fuel filters and changed the blades. 2 of the tires were flat, but we fixed them with a plug and some "fix-a-flat". We also put in a battery and we greased everything that needed greasing and removed the deck and sanded and painted a few spots that were rusted. He has mowed with it a couple of times and he said it mows great. He spent about $250 more in parts and now he has a good running JD mower. I hope you are blessed as we were.
