I joined looking for help, but now have help to give. Unfortunately, I first tried a complete carburetor cleaning and rebuild, and fuel pump replacement. My earlier spring maintenance included fresh oil and oil filter, new air filters, fuel filter, spark plugs, valve adjust. I also drained the fuel and added fresh gasoline from a new supply. After the carburetor and fuel pump, sputtering under load continued. The culprit was so simple I should have checked first. The vent for the fuel cap on the fuel tank was mostly plugged! Duh. That's why the beast ran OK for awhile, then sputtered, and if let sit for awhile ran OK for a bit again! It was getting a bit of air, but not enough to keep a partial vacuum form limiting fuel flow under load.
