I own a MS170 and the pull cord broke. Any hints on how to replace it? I am not paying someone else to to the work I can do.

Good luck. It's been a long time, but I was told that I should be able to fix broken pull cords before. In spite of my best efforts at the time, I can remember failing on on pull start chain saws a couple of times as well as pull start push mowers at least twice. Keep us posted on how successful you are. I have the same model chainsaw, and may need to try myself one day.

It is one of the easiest ropes to replace.

Here is one out of my E-Bay parts. First make sure there is no tension rotationally on the pulley, then remove the clip washer and pawl. Then the pulley
should lift right off.

Remove the old rope from the pulley, and install the new one in the hole and pull up through the center pocket. {Always melt the tip of the rope and shape into a point, makes it easier to thread and won't fray later}. Tie a double not and pull on rope tight so it crams back into center pocket as in pic.

Then set the pulley on the starter shaft and move it around lightly until it falls back into its position, as in pic.

Run the rope through the starter eyelet, and up through old handle the same way as the old one, melt the tip on this side too.

Reinstall the washer and pawl and clip, then wind the rope around the pulley until it is full, then wind around once or twice more so the rope stays tight
while running.
