hi, the second wire without the diode goes to the headlight, but your mower lights will prob work without hooking that one up,, tom

i hooked up the stater, red wire with the dioad to the battery.
when i put the meter on before i get 12.7 volts after i start the mower i get 12.4 volts. does that
mean the stater is bad. or am i doing something wrong.

The wire with the diode is for converting AC to DC to charge your battery. The wire with the diode should go to a battery live so it charges the battery.
The other wire will be AC so it should go to your headlights.
The AC wire will give AC voltage with multimeter set with one probe in wire and 1 to earth on AC volts.
To check DC amps or battery charging put probe from votage connector to amps connector and turn dial to amps DC.
Put one probe to diode wire and the other to LIVE of battery.
Record your readings.
I think its about 30volts AC and You should get 2-4 amps when running at 3600RPM
