starting issues

I just recently bought rider Craftsman 26hp CV730-0016. I got it pretty cheap due to missing fuel pump and battery. I installed the battery and turn the key and nothing. I can jump the starter using screw driver and it will turn over. The switch doesn't seem to power the lights and the volt meter on the dash does nothing. What do I need to check besides a bad switch maybe? Any help would be much appreciated.

I would start by checking the fuses to make sure they are good. Could be located hidden next to the battery, or clipped to the frame next to the steering column behind the engine.

I found the fuse and found someone had shoved a wire in the socket to bypass the fuse and the fuse was also in it and blown. The socket looks to be no longer good. Any advice? some how replace the socket and start looking for a short or bare wire ? attached picture

I would start by replacing the fuse holder. they are available at most auto parts stores. then start looking for a short. Could be also that there was a bad connection at the fuse which led to the melting.

I believe the the socket melted cause it had that wire shoved in it and at one time was loose, it was melted in there pretty good, also found this bare wire photos attached. Don't have a wire diagram was told its suppose to go to the battery something to do with ignition not really sure.

the multi black wire would be a chassis ground. May or may not of been used. The red wire could be several things. Could be charging system related. positive wire that should go from starter solenoid to key switch. you will have to figure out where is goes to find out where to hook it to.

K I traced that wire to the fuse hold then it goes to the amp meter, shouldn't that wire go to the solenoid? there was a blue wire going to the solenoid that comes from the plug where the engine wiring harness meets up and that wiring going into that plug is white.....

K So I replaced the fuse holder and new fuse, replaced the relay and interlock switch. When I turn the key hour meter works, you can here the solenoid in the carb and hear the pto switch engaging something below the motor. Only thing I cant get is power to the starter solenoid. I have also tested the key switch and its fine for continuity. The seat switch and interlock switch run inline with the power to the solenoid? Also having a hard time removing the fuel stem from the tank as its broke off, I have a new one coming in the mail. Think im just gonna remove the tank and clean it and remove the stem that way. Cant find any instructions on how to get to the tank I know I must remove the back half of the mower and seat.

most John Deer's are famous for that as far as the fuel tank goes. that was the only way to take the one out of my JD 116, was to remove the rear cover plate. someone let their kid play with it, after they put it in the back yard. the kid put about the equivalent of a quart of dirt in it. was thinking of buying, but got suspicious about it when i asked if it would start, and he told me not to try starting it at the moment, saying the fuel needed to be replaced. instead got it for 25% of what he wanted for it
