Began with low battery, had to charge each time to start. Installed new battery, hooked it up backwards (stupid, was not looking), got that fixed. When connecting the positive lead to the battery, the solenoid spins, but the starter does not engage. Key on, key off, does not matter. Did the backwards connection ruin something? Thoughts on where to begin are appreciated.......

First you don't tell us what you have a make and model numbers will help.
second solenoids don't "spin"
did you try and start it with the connection's backwards..?
take a jump lead (car jump leads) and connect one end on the solenoid the one from the battery, and then jump it across the other big lead on the solenoid, starter should turn, if so replace solenoid, and if not check the starter.

Scag model STC48A 19KA / Kawasaki engine FH6-1V-BS29-R. Yes, tried to start it with the connections backwards. Connected neg to neg, then when connecting pos to pos, the starter spins, but no start. Ignition key is in off position, seat is up, so the seat switch is open electrically.

Are you saying that the starter turns when the key switch is in the off, and that the engine will turn but will not fire..?
Going by the wiring diagram the only things that you may have damage are the module and the hour meter and somethings on the engine ie rectifier/regulator.

Correct - starter spins with key in off position. Starter spins but does not engage the flywheel on the engine, so the engine does not turn. Right now, I cannot connect the positive lead to the positive battery terminal because if I do, the starter spins - regardless of key switch position or seat position. I'm beginning to think I have an interlock module problem........

My guess is that when you miss wired fit, you ruined the solenoid, which means the internal connections are frozen together. If that happens, as soon as you apply any current to the system the starter will start spinning. The engine will not start as the key switch is in the OFF position, which is grounding out the coil.

So first take off the solenoid and replace it.
