I have an older Briggs 5hp motor with a starter clutch that is missing the ball bearings. The Briggs part# for these is 691604. My question is can a "standard" non-Briggs bearing be used, and if so, what size (diameter) is the bearing.
Any ball bearing which will allow the center part of the ratchet to turn backwards freely but catch when turned forward will work but I would think it is going to be much easier to just find another old starter clutch with bearings and complete new clutch is not very expensive aftermarket.
One would assume he would use the same size HOWEVER they do NOT need to be the same size as long as they meet the criteria I set out as only one at a time catches.
