Starter battery question

I bought a 8481AE Lawnboy in which the battery is dead. I guess I could try to charge it, but I'm thinking it needs to be replaced. The battery is a Hawker 12v, no information on amperage is listed. Lawnmower dealer A wants 86.79 (OUCH), lawnmower dealer B wants 88.65 (DOUBLE OUCH). You can by a Hawker Cyclonic battery found online;0809-0020 Hawker Cyclon Monobloc, 12 Volt 5 AH Battery (about 46.00)

Another thought is to use a Hobbico S.L.A. battery that model airplane flyers use to power their 12v starter motors (12v 4.5 amps) for like 20.00. Would this battery work? TowerHobbies.com | Hobbico TorqMaster Mini 12V 4.5A Battery

My Lawnboy repair manual doesn't list the amperage for the battery, does anybody know how many amps are required?

Thanks much
Jeff

I think the amp-hour rating (Ah) is what you want to look for and I'll bet that you can do a lot better than $86 or even $46 for that size battery if you're willing to do a little adapting (mounts, terminals).

Isn't there any markings on the battery itself?

You might look at small motorcycle batteries also -- they're probably about the same size and rating.

Well, after talking to a Lawnboy dealer, he said batteries on walk behind mowers are generally 3 to 5 amps. I went with the Tower Hobbies 12v 4.5 amp starter battery ($22.50). Hopefully I won't end up in a ball of flames while mowing my lawn because the battery exploded,,,LOL.

First,, be careful buying a walmart battery, they may not be rated for that engine, always check the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) I know for my Husqv. YTH2348 it requires over 100 CCA. so,, AH is not as important as CCA. if you dont know what type of battery was put in it by the Manufacturer, it's easy to look up online.

The Tower Hobbies battery does indeed start my LawnBoy. At 23.00 it's way cheaper than the original battery from a lawnmower shop (86.00). Simply a matter of clipping off the wiring harness and putting on two spade connectors. Down side is the L.B. green plastic cover is a tad too small for it, but I secured it to the plastic drive pulley cover with 3M outdoor mounting tape. The charging rate of the alternator is very close to the charger (about 400 mA),so it should be safe. If you're interested it's the Tower Hobbies mini torquemaster 12v 4.5a.

The battery charger is 12vdc 600mA, the Lawboy alternator I think is 400 mA.
