I have a 6.74hp walk behind. It starts fine but soon looses power and belches black smoke. I plan on changing the oil but I don't know how. ( just got it today from craigslist). Other than new gas what else should I do to make it run good?
A new spark plug and air filter may be in your future. They made two versions of these mowers, one with a Kawasaki and one with a Briggs. I own one of each, and the Kaw has been just a little more of a maintenance hound than the Briggs. (Probably because the Kaw sat for 9 months with fuel in it.:ashamedFor changing out the oil, I just warmed my machines up thoroughly, and then tilted them up on their side and unscrewed the dipstick. I filled my machines up with synthetic oil (Amsoil ASE) and while I had them on their side sharpened and balanced the blade.
Thanks, it's a Briggs engine. I did what you said and tipped it over. Now the problem is the governor. The spring was missing and it wouldn't rn. Added a spring I bought at the hardware store but can't get it to run faster than idle now.
Can't figure out how the governor spring attaches to the carb
