Does anybody else tap their spark plug to decrease the gap while you’re checking it. I
do that and I don’t know where I learned how to do it or if I made it up. I very lightly tap it on my work bench.

The only time I will "tap" a spark plug gap is to make sure I can set the correct "gap space" as required in accordance with the engines owners manual spec's......so always check with your ZT mowers "engine owners manual specification" section concerning spark plug gapping, etc.
Other than that.....don't really see it is necessary to tap a spark plug gap for anything else.
