solenoid problems

i have a john deer lt180 i bought a new solenoid and it will not start. if i take it off and cover the fuel bowl with my finger where the solenoide is suppose to go it starts right up. Any ideas whats going on?

You need to find out of you have 12V to the solenoid, and that it is grounding properly

the wire going to the solenoid i checked it and i have good voltage. The other wire (black) the ground wire i test that and i have no volt at all, which i'm assuming means the solenoid is bad but i just purchased it.

did you check continuity of the black wire,be sure it is grounded:thumbsup:

I took off the black wire all together, cleaned the places where they screw into. Rechecked voltage a.d still nothing. Is this the only wire i can check. The solenoid seems to function fine the lever inside goes up and down just fine. Is there a way to check th solenoid to make sure it goes back and forth. Like to battery charger ? Just thinking of anything.

You should not have voltage on the black ground wire. The way to test this is to use a test light with the alligator clip on the positive side of the battery and the metal probe to the black wire. If the wire is a ground wire the test light will light up as the circuit is completed.

I turned the key to theall the way but did not start it nd i could hear the solenoid click so i knew that was working. With persistance I took apart the carb again and there was a clogged injector now it starts up just fine. I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I will definately be back if any more issues.
