I put a new solenoid in my toro 15-44 HXL Briggs 15.5 hp engine. Hooked up the wires but still dead. Grounded the solenoid with a separate wire and then it cranked with the key start. But now it's not getting spark. Mag and coil had rust. Cleaned all that but still no spark. I guess I need a coil. My volt/ohm tester is broke so I couldn't test it today. TIA !!

Coils cannot be tested accurately due to the internals of them, you should have a small black kill wire hooked to the coil, un plug it, try to start. If the mower DOES NOT start with the coil kill wire unplugged, the coil is the problem. if the mower DOES start with the coil kill wire unplugged, there is an electrical fault grounding the coil.
