Hope someone can help, Recently purchased a used 10hp snapper rear engine rider, unit was running fine then all of a sudden began back firing, and running rough. I thought it might be bad gas (although it was fresh) so I drained the tank and put a different fresh amount in. Now the mower will start (with effort) but is still running rough and when I put it in gear it stalls out. It also continues to want to back fire but not as much as before. I'm also having an intermittent problem with the starter. Some times it fires right up and others it seems dead and I have to keep on turning the key until it finally fires. The engine is a Briggs & Stratton Model 214707, type 0113 E1, code 02113 ZA.

Bet your engine is running rich. Take a look at the spark plug, if it is black with carbon I'm right. What you are going to have to do is remove the carb, give it a good bath, (not just spray clean) and reassemble with a new float needle and seat. Should do the trick.

Thanks for the advice Rivets, I did pull the plug the other day and it was fouled. Will pull the carb and give it a bath. Let you know how I make out ! Went to B&S site for part info and apparently there are two possible carbs on the unit I'll have to try to identify mine before ordering the parts.

Also any info on the intermittent starting problem ? Could it be it be the voltage regulator?

Carb cleaning and rebuilding will probably help the starting problem.
